with the base and a membrane hinge is cemnented on (C). A writing lever (not shown in the illustration) is attached to the top surface. The bellows is now made ready for use by smearing generously a layer of paraffin oil on the membrane, thus not only sealing any microscopic holes, but rendering it more flexible. These bellows may be made of any volume capacity to fulfil a particular conadition of recording. It should be remembered that the more cubical the bellows is made, the more amplitude will be recorded for a certain volume change, and thus it is more sensitive but has less mechanical advantage. A useful proportion is shown in the illustration. J. R. DI PALMA J. RAYMO:ND JOHNSON DEPARTMENT OFB PHYSIOLOGY, LONG ISLAND COLLEGE OF MEDICINE

"Bird biting" mosquitoes and human disease: a review of the role of Culex pipiens complex mosquitoes in epidemiology.
The transmission of vector-borne pathogens is greatly influenced by the ecology of their vector, which is in turn shaped by genetic ancestry, the environment, and the hosts that are fed on. One group of vectors, the mosquitoes in the Culex pipiens complex, play key roles in the transmission of a range of pathogens including several viruses such as West Nile and St. Louis encephalitis viruses, a...
متن کاملHost compatibility rather than vector-host-encounter rate determines the host range of avian Plasmodium parasites.
Blood-feeding arthropod vectors are responsible for transmitting many parasites between vertebrate hosts. While arthropod vectors often feed on limited subsets of potential host species, little is known about the extent to which this influences the distribution of vector-borne parasites in some systems. Here, we test the hypothesis that different vector species structure parasite-host relations...
متن کاملHigh Prevalence and Lineage Diversity of Avian Malaria in Wild Populations of Great Tits (Parus major) and Mosquitoes (Culex pipiens)
Avian malaria studies have taken a prominent place in different aspects of evolutionary ecology. Despite a recent interest in the role of vectors within the complex interaction system of the malaria parasite, they have largely been ignored in most epidemiological studies. Epidemiology of the disease is however strongly related to the vector's ecology and behaviour, and there is a need for basic...
متن کاملVector-host interactions of Culex pipiens complex in northeastern and southwestern USA.
Studies on the vector-host interactions of Culex pipiens complex mosquitoes by sequencing portions of mitochondrial cytochrome b gene indicate that Cx. p. pipiens f. pipiens predominantly feed on avian hosts (93.1%), and focus feeding activity on several key bird species, in particular the American robin, the gray catbird, and the house sparrow in Connecticut. However, Cx. p. quinquefasciatus i...
متن کاملGenetic variation associated with mammalian feeding in Culex pipiens from a West Nile virus epidemic region in Chicago, Illinois.
Mosquitoes of the Culex pipiens complex are important vectors of West Nile virus in the United States. We examined the genetic variations of Cx. pipiens mosquitoes from Chicago, Illinois that were determined to be principally ornithophilic but exhibited a relatively higher inclination for mammalian hosts including humans. Microsatellite analysis of 10 polymorphic markers was performed on 346 en...
